General Installation Guidelines

186networks provides professional installation for all services (Slashband Fiber, Slashband Wireless, VoIP Phone, and eFax). Installation is typically free for standard connections in select areas. Some installations may incur fees for special circumstances (e.g., trenching, pole access, long drops), which will be quoted and agreed upon in advance.

Fiber Installation

  • Standard installation includes up to 300 feet of fiber drop from the street to your home or business.
  • Before installation, we coordinate with Miss Dig 811 to mark public utilities (required by law, usually 2–3 days prior).
  • You will be asked to identify any private underground items (sprinklers, septic lines, invisible fences, private lighting, etc.) to avoid damage.
  • On install day (typically 2–4 hours), an authorized adult (21+) must be present. The technician will:
    • Run fiber from the street or pole to your building
    • Drill a small hole (dime-sized) in an exterior wall if needed
    • Install the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) — usually in garage, basement, or utility closet
    • Set up your router and test speeds
    • Connect devices and explain usage
  • Complex properties (long runs, rock, landscaping) may require additional fees or time — quoted upfront.

Wireless Installation

  • Installation includes mounting an outdoor antenna (typically on roof, pole, or wall) with clear line-of-sight to our tower.
  • An indoor modem/router is installed and connected to your network.
  • Installation time is usually 1–3 hours.
  • We may need roof access or a ladder — an adult must be present.
  • No trenching or drilling into walls is usually required unless special routing is needed.

Phone & eFax Installation

VoIP phone and eFax services are typically self-installed using your existing internet connection. We provide configuration guides and remote support. Optional adapters for existing fax machines or phones are available if needed.

Important: All installations require safe access to your property. We reserve the right to refuse or charge extra for unsafe or inaccessible locations. Standard installation is included where feasible; additional charges may apply for non-standard work (quoted and approved in advance).

Customer Responsibilities

  • Provide safe access to installation areas (inside and outside)
  • Identify and mark private underground utilities
  • Be present during installation (or authorize someone 21+)
  • Notify us of any special requirements (pets, locked gates, etc.)
